Wine enthusiasts and collectors, prepare the pallets.
Christie’s is hosting her first wine auction since 2022 on June 12, contributed by a billionaire businessman, a private collector and winner of the America Cup Bill Koch. The three -day event has 1,500 lots that include about 8,000 bottles of historic years from its private collection, which has a low estimate of $ 15 million but could exceed $ 21 million.
Bordeaux and Burgundy constitute the part of the lion, and in the heart of the collection there are more than 750 large-format bottles, including more than 45 Jeroboams (three liters) and Methuselahs (six liters) of Romané-Conti Domaine.
In fact, the wine producer of wine is the whole list of the top ten for value, with number one, a dome of the Romanée-Conti-Conti de Nuits Grand Cru de 1985, seeing a high estimate of $ 180,000.
“A Chicago wine distributor paid me this bottle in 1988. He acquired -in Europe,” Koch said in The Post, referring to himself as a “geek” of wine.
“I loved large -scale bottles because they take longer to mature,” he said. “It has to do with superficial space and oxygen. The larger the bottle, the less exposure to oxygen, the better they age wine. But, leaving aside my geekiness, this wine is one of the vintages to my wife.
In fact, 1985 was a great year for wine, but it is also big. A Methuselah holds six liters, or eight standard bottles.
“$ 120,000 divided by 203.2 ounces is equivalent to $ 590 more by UNÇA,” said Joe Czerwinski, the Canada lawyer’s wine reviewer, the Napa Valley and the New York State Regions.
“This is the low estimate, which does not include the buyer’s premium. If it is the high estimate, talk about more than $ 900 per ounce.”
Jhonel Faelnar, Director of Beverages for Naeun Hospitality, includes Atoboy of New York City, Naro and Atomix of two Michelin, he thinks he is one of the best vintages ever produced.
“Romanée-Conti is, of course, one of the most storage vineyards in Burgundy and the world, from one of the most sacred producers in Pinot Noir that has ever existed,” he said. “I would certainly like to drink this bottle, if I had the opportunity to do it.”
He said the price of $ 180,000 is worth it, for “people who can afford”.
“These wines are a story and it is a special time to find them, especially if you can be part of opening them and tasting them,” said Faelnar.
Although the collection has a variety of price points, the 1929 Château Haut-Brion, from $ 2,000 to $ 3,000, caught Faelnar’s attention, he said that some may be too rich in the blood.
“At this point you are offering a work of art, which may be wrapped and ingested,” said Faelnar.
“Often they can be disappointed in the cup; after all, they are bottles of one hundred years old. But the anticipation that can be as surprising as you can expect, it feeds the hopes and madness of each collector.”
Six Magnums from the 1982 Château Mouton-Rothschild are also at $ 9,000 to $ 14,000. This particular vintage unlockets a basic memory for Koch, sharing it with the agent of Will Smith, Jim Lassiter. (Yes, this Will Smith.)
“He came to my house with Steve Tisch and David Bloomfield of escape artists,” he recalled. “They had bought the rights of the movie in the book” Millionaire’s vinegar ” [and] They sought my participation and investment capital. The excellent wine was the only thing we agreed on that night. “
Koch said his actions of chemical engineering helped influence his wine collection. At one point, he had more than 43,000 bottles through his wineries on his farms in Palm Beach, Cape Cod and Aspen.
The auction comes as a gift that continues to give: it is a part of a collection of wines that has spent half a century.
“These bottles reflect my taste, my interest in history, my passion for collection and my respect for the care and work that develops when developing great wines, year after year,” he said about his lot, now at 21,000 bottles. “I have some of the best wines in the world, stored in a state -of -the -art winery and more carefully investigated and reviewed than any collection I know. I’m enormously proud of it.”
“I don’t think we will see many more collections like this again,” said Adam Bilbey, the overall wine chief and Christie’s spirits. “This is an opportunity to be part of the Vinosa story.”
Koch said in the publication that after sale, “he will still have about 12,000” bottles in the cellar, but he does not expect to add.
“As for those I separate, including 45 large-scale bottles, two lives and a daily party regime would be needed to pass them all. It’s time for others to enjoy.”
